A few days ago, I went with my mom to visit a family friend. Her 24-year-old son was visiting from college. I had met him briefly a year ago and remembered him being remarkably polite and soft-spoken. We had a great time talking about books and coffee. Yesterday, he offered to pick up my mother, my elder brother, and me in his car. While driving, he turns to my brother and casually asks: "Tum didi ko cafe vagera leke gaye kya?" The car went dead silent. My brother (who is 22 and visibly looks older than me) looked baffled. My mom laughed and clarified: "Wait, she's two years younger than him! She's only 20." The guy pauses, glances at me in the rearview mirror, and deadpans: "Accha... lagti toh thodi badi hain." Instant soul death. This man is a full-grown 24-year-old with a groomed beard calling a 20-year-old college girl "didi" and then following it up with "you look older than your age." I sat in the backseat contemplating jumping out into oncoming traffic. Respectfully, my crush on him evaporated into thin air right there.
