I'm 17, living in a PG away from home for the very first time, and my roommate is 21+. I don't even know where to begin. She is literally on speaker or video call 24/7. The second she opens her eyes in the morning, she's either FaceTiming her boyfriend or blasting reels on full blast. She treats me like her personal errand girl. My entrance prep means the world to me, but studying in this room has become impossible. She sees me with books open or attending live lectures, yet she paces up and down the room shouting into her phone. Her voice pierces straight through my noise-cancelling earbuds. Today she was having an elaborate conversation about when they're planning to have kids. There is a huge balcony right attached to our room, but she refuses to step outside. Meanwhile, if I get a phone call longer than two minutes, I rush to the balcony out of courtesy. I broke down and told my mom, who ended up calling the hostel warden. Now I'm terrified of retaliation because I have to share this small space with her for the rest of the year. On top of that, she placed a Laddoo Gopal idol in the room, which means arbitrary rules: no slippers, no laundry basket in sight, and I have to scrub my coffee mug the second I take my last sip or get yelled at. How do people survive toxic roommates without losing their minds?
