My boyfriend's birthday is coming up this week. Because we're in a long-distance relationship across different cities, I wanted to find little ways to make him feel celebrated despite the physical separation. I spent four hours on Sunday baking a layered vanilla sponge cake completely from scratch. I decorated it with piping, lit candles, and recorded a heartfelt video countdown for him. Obviously, he couldn't eat it through a screen—the gesture was about putting time, patience, and love into creating something solely for him. When I sent the video, his reaction was completely flat. He watched it, said nothing about the effort, and just continued talking about his office workload. I actually had to ask him, "Did you see the cake?" before he offered a dry, perfunctory "Oh yeah, thank you." Maybe I'm oversensitive, but when you spend your Sunday pouring your heart into a surprise and get met with sheer apathy, it stings. Am I wrong for expecting a little genuine warmth?
